dream art and artists on the web

Dream Art & Artists on the Web

Brenda FerrimaniBrenda Ferrimani is a painter of dreams. Her dream paintings have been seen on the cover of Dreamtime and Dream Network magazines, and the Rocky Mountain Dream Journal. Her work has been featured at the International Conference on the Fantastic in the Arts and ASD’s Dream Oddyssey Art Exhibition in 2001.
GoldringAlyssa Goldring states that “Dreams have guided me thoughout my life and are often the source of my art work. Through art and writing I explore my inner world and bring its dream enerby and wisdom into my everyday life. I have a “mix and match” approach to media, and use acrylics in various ways, as well as transparent and opaque water color, monotype, charcoal, brush and ink and other drawing tools, fabric photograph and collage”. Her website features her images and dreams. Epic Dewfall
Epic Dewfall blends images from his dreams with his own poetry, as in this piece called “The Dreamers “. As he says: “I get ideas for my paintings from lucid dreams. About once a month when I’m dreaming, I will realize I’m dreaming, and when I do, I then walk around in the dream looking at art on the walls. I usually find many paintings on every wall. By the time one of these lucid dreams ends, I usually have one or two good paintings memorized. I always recreate them in pastel on 12 by 18 inch paper. I’ve been doing this as a hobby since 1986.”
Dream Ikons
Dream Ikons is the work of two artists, Scherer and Ouporov, who utilize the inspiration of dream images to create gilded icons. “The image of the dreamer is in the center, while the surrounding, illuminated area represents the dream itself. In the tradition of medieval manuscript illumination, the center is a fixed, rational image and the borders represent the irrational side of the imagination–in this case, the unconscious realm of our amorphous dreams, desires or nightmares. Whereas in medieval painting, the gold traditionally symbolizes the union with God, in Dream Ikons it is the unconscious state of sleep. In many cultures, dreams are believed to be a direct channel to the spirit world, therefore the gold can also represent this connection.”
Rahima WarrenRahima Warren’s website SoulPlay, is an intuitive interface to access her art based her dreams. A graduate of the transpersonal psychology program at John F. Kennedy University, and a registered marriage and family therapist, she created a deep process of inner growth called SoulPlay, and led SoulPlay workshops and women’s groups. She also led Image, Symbol and Dream trainings for psychotherapists and counselors.

dreams and culture

Dreams & Culture

Dreams follow us out of sleep, bringing their magic and mystery into our waking lives, building a bridge between consciousness and unconsciousness, between the known and the unknown. Dreams inspire us to reclaim their experience through the language of creative thought, art, literature, film, music and movement; through our eyes, hands, hearts and minds. As we express ourselves, so we shape our cultures, and dreams become an integral part of that process.

dream mapping

Dream Mapping

compassDream Mapping is a creative way of working with dreams through the construction of dream maps: image assemblages or collages derived directly from our dreams. Because dreams speak to us in the language of images and symbols, engaging directly with these images can be a powerful way to navigate the unique world of our dreams.
The Dream Map process utilizes a variety of dream interpretation and exploration techniques, which are easily learned and adaptive to personal learning styles. Dream Maps can be created alone, combined with journalling, or shared with others in small groups. It is a non-threatening and non-invasive process, requiring only an open mind, curiosity, and a spirit of adventure.
Dream Tree co-sponsors workshops and classes in Dream Mapping. For more information, visit Dream Maps.

controlling your dreams

You can control your dreams by learning and implementing what is call 'lucid dreaming'. Dream control is not only possible using this method, but it enables you to be completely aware of dreaming and in this state you can control the activities of your dreams, You can also control the outcome of your dreams.
What is the true meaning of the term lucid dreaming and in what way does it work? Are there any advantages, and is it truly a possibility for people to achieve control and make journeys nightly into the realm of dreaming their mini series of unique travels? This article will answer these questions that are very commonly asked on the subject of dream control.

Exactly What is Dream Control?
Dream control is something which is available to us through the use if lucid dreaming and grants us the ability to know, even while in the midst of a dream, to be aware that you are doing so ? this lets you start to take control over the direction of your dreams! Even while you are fast asleep, your mind can be in total control of what happens.
Those who suffer from nightmares, especially recurring ones can get relief from these bad dreams by using dream control. Once they have learned this simple but powerful skill, these people can finally get the good night?s rest they so badly need.
Common Ways of Inducing Lucid Dreaming
One of the most effective ways of inducing lucid dreaming is also one of the newest ? binaural audio. This is a technology which involves listening to two different frequencies at the same time. This listening produces deep relaxation and allows your brainwaves to synchronize, leading to the REM sleep state necessary for lucid dreaming to occur.
Self-hypnosis and meditation were the methods used to induce lucid dreaming before binaural audio recordings became available on DVD and CD formats. Self hypnosis and meditation both work to achieve lucid dreaming, but they can take a while to master, making them not necessarily the best choice if you?d like to start lucid dreaming sooner rather than later.
Many additional techniques, since then, have been developed as methods for inducing lucid dreaming by those experts in both fields of psychology and science. And regardless of any of the earlier methods used the basic purpose still remains the same. To train the mind while in the state of sleep to be aware of being in a dream. The state needed to begin lucid dreaming.
To obtain this, it is essential to begin while awake and the key is to remember to say something or do something while dreaming to trigger recognition that is necessary for the mind to be aware and allow us the ability to control the activities in our dreams.
You can tell yourself that you will do or say a certain thing in your dream to remind yourself and begin lucid dreaming as you start to fall asleep. Once you do or say this cue, you will come to the awareness that you are dreaming and begin to have a lucid dream.
This is considered as a mnemonic or mild process of bringing on lucid dreaming, and was founded by Dr. Stephen LaBerge (a scientist). Through this your mind becomes in total control of what is happening as you dream, this means you will be in no way harmed because it is only in your mind and of that you are in control of.
Lucid dreaming can also be achieved by keeping a journal or a diary. Keeping a notebook with a pen or pencil on your end table beside your bed and jotting down what you remember of your dreams in it. This is usually accomplished on first awakening and continued for several nights. After which you will begin to realize you remember what you've jotted down, in your notebook. You remember these notes and having similar dreams and now you begin to have control over your dreams.
With dream control you can go anywhere, do anything and see anyone that you can imagine. There are no limits to what you can do when you are lucid dreaming.
According to the experts, lucid dreaming has one possible drawback. As in real life, if you have too much of a good thing, this can produce an effect opposite of what you want. Mainly, is that dreaming in a natural state we are often made aware of things about ourselves that are important and things that would have stayed hidden. Lucid dreaming is an experience that is enjoyable and something you should experience, but not all the time. Take a break in between sessions.

conscious dreaming

Conscious dreaming or lucid dreaming, as it is also called, is the state of being asleep and aware of your dreams while you are asleep. You are completely aware of what you are dreaming in this dream state and can consciously control your dreams.
The idea of being able to do anything you want in your dreams is amazing to think about, but anyone can learn to do it. It is not hard at all to do and offers an outlet for living out your fantasies and releasing your hidden desires. You can learn step-by-step proven ways to achieve the state of lucid dreaming.

Once you have your reasons in order, you need to learn the way to get your mind prepared for having lucid dreams. You must be in the right mental state for this type of dreaming. The first step is to start remembering your dreams. This means the dreams you have every night need to be recalled.
Once you have a clear idea of your goals, you are ready to start practicing the techniques which lead to conscious dreaming. The first step for many is dream recall, which involves training yourself to remember you dreams in detail.
When you start to consciously dream, you have to recall the details of all the dreams you have, each night. One of the most common ways to do this is to keep a diary by your bedside table with a pen or pencil. Each morning, first thing, is to enter details of your dreams, all of the details that you can remember. The longer you wait to do this, the less you will remember. So this is of the up most importance, so the details are as accurate as they can be.
You will remember more about your dreams each time you write the information in the diary and you?ll also be able to use your dream to refresh your memory. Now your mind is primed to remember details of your dreams and being aware of your dreams has become easy. You may suddenly become awake and aware that what you dreamt is not real.
There are additional methods used in lieu of the dream diary. Hypnosis is a popular method and can help achieve the state of mind needed to enter lucid or conscious dreaming. After a few sessions, hypnosis may help an individual to remember the smallest facts that he or she may have forgotten. Your ready to start after learning this technique.
You may wake up suddenly when you are having a conscious dream in the beginning. This is not unusual. Go over the events in your dream as you drift back to sleep. If you focus on them hard enough, you will go back into the same dream and perhaps control the events and the outcome of them.
A third way to train yourself to conscious dream is to awaken yourself a couple of hours earlier than normal, then falling back to sleep. You are able to stay more aware in your dreams in this period of sleep, in fact you may feel you are half-awake and half-asleep. You may feel as if you are lying in bed thinking or daydreaming. If you are able to do this regularly, you will find lucid dreaming will come easily.
Pay attention closely to your sleep patterns and this will confirm the times that are best to this type of dream. Do no cut your hours of sleep too less than you need. Lucid dreaming is less likely to occur if you are sleep deprived or tired.
However, good news. It has been found that lucid dreams have a positive effect on insomnia. By lucid dreaming, the effect is that it can teach your mind to close or shut down the distressful and bad thoughts which keep you awake.
Conscious dreaming can be learned much easier than you think ? it doesn?t take years of practice to do.
It is so easy to lucid dream that almost anyone can achieve it. Put a little time into it and choose one of these methods to learn the power of lucid dreaming. Try all three methods and see which one works best for you. Discover what lies within your dreams.

scents can change the way we feel

  1. Need a pick-me-up? Grab a cup of java and light a citrus candle, citrus scents enhance energy and boost mood; so look for candles with lemon, lime, grapefruit, verbena, or orange scents.
2. Lavender Scent - Relaxation
When it's time to wind down try burning a lavender candle. In studies, lavender has been found to correlate with slower heart rate, lower blood pressure, and lower arterial pressure. It has also been found to decrease muscle tension. Other scents that have been found to have relaxing effects are bergamot and sandalwood.
3. Citris, Minty, and Pine Scents - Uplifting, Clean
If you want to create a cheerful, clean environment in your home, choose candles scented with citrus, mint, or pine. Often these scents can be not only uplifting and motivating, but just give that "clean" feel. When you or your guests walk in, these scents will be a fresh breeze to welcome anyone.
4. Jasmine, Gardenia, Sandalwood, and Rose Scents - Romantic
There's romance in the air if you're burning scents such as these. Floral and woody scents give that wistful, romantic feel to a room.
5. Season Enhancing Scents
Delve into the season with your favorite candles scents! Autumn's a great time for burning pumpkin spice candles, as well as other baked good candle scents, as is winter. To create that cozy winter environment, choose cinnamon, apple, berry, and pine candles. Fresh candle scents such as cucumber melon are great for spring, as well as fresh cut grass candles which carry into summer. Nothing says summer like a nice citrus, like a lemonade candle scent drifting through the air.
If you love a certain candle, soap, or body spray - whatever the scent may be - don't do what I too often do, which is save it until that scent runs out! Light it and enjoy, it's sure to affect you in a positive way!

benefits of aromapherapy oils

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years for their exquisite aromas and natural healing powers. Rich in botanical activity and antioxidants, plant oils encourage radiant, healthy skin, working at a cellular level to keep the complexion soft and looking youthful. By harnessing their therapeutic properties, aromatherapy works to improve our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing.

THE PHYSICAL BENEFITS

Essential oils are made up of very small molecules, which means they can easily bring their unique healing properties to every cell of the body. They are traditionally used to help ease muscular aches and pains, improve circulation and ease sinus congestion. They also have a positive effect on the skin, penetrating into the deeper layers to encourage the process of cellular renewal, enhance blood circulation and help problems such as acne, eczema and ageing skin.

THE EMOTIONAL BENEFITS

Linked to the areas of the brain governing instinct, memory and emotion, our sense of smell is the most primitive of our senses. Through the pathways between smell and the deep centres of the brain, essential oils can have a dynamic effect on our emotional state. They can help transform our moods and move us from one state of mind to another.

COLOUR MEANINGS IN DREAMS

normally when we dream we dream in black and white but if your lucky to be aware of your dream we can some times dream in colour .............so here  are definitions of what the color in your dreams signify,  first consider your own personal and special associations with the color. Does the color remind you of a particular person, a body part, a childhood toy, or some object. For example, the color yellow may remind you of the childhood school bus your rode in or the yellow house you grew up in. To further guide you in your interpretations, below are common associations of various colors.
Beige represents the basics, the essentials and the barest form. It may also indicate your neutral or unbiased position in some matter.
Black symbolizes the unknown, the unconscious, danger, mystery, darkness, death, mourning, rejection, hate or malice. The color invites you to delve deeper in your unconscious in order to gain a better understanding of yourself. It also signifies a lack of love and lack of support. More positively, black represents potential and possibilities. It is like a clean or blank slate.
If the feeling in the dream is one of joy, then blackness could imply hidden spirituality and divine qualities.
To dream in black and white, suggests that you need to be more objective in formulating your decisions. White represents purity, perfection, peace, innocence, dignity, cleanliness, awareness, and new beginnings. In Eastern cultures, white is associated with death and mourning.   TOP
The color yellow has both positive and negative connotations. If the dream is a pleasant one, then the color yellow is symbolic of intellect, energy, agility, happiness, harmony, and wisdom. On the other hand, if the dream is an unpleasant one, then the color represents deceit, disgrace, betrayal, cowardice and sickness. You have a fear or an inability to make a decision or to take action. Your desire to please others is at the risk of sacrificing your own needs and happiness. As a result, you are experiencing many setbacks.
To dream of a yellow room, suggests that you need to use your mind. You are feeling mentally stimulated.   TOP

dream painting by brenda ferrimani

"The Branching Woman"

Branching WomanDream Painting by Brenda Ferrimani, for Patricia Garfield. This is Patricia Garfield's dream from her journal dated 3/9/79, and also contained in her new book called Mourning Dove Dream Poems.
"I am with a group of professionals at a conference. We are discussing various aspects of dreaming. Several people have spoken earlier of the symbolism involved in "leaving," referring to leaves dropping from a tree. Zal and I are seated on chairs at the front. All of us are eating. I stand up and say, "We've talked about 'leaving'; I'd like to discuss the concept of 'branching.' I've had several dreams in which there was a growth. There was a woman's head and from it grew branches, almost like antlers, but many more and more, each subdividing until it grew very thick, dense."
I describe more and more, feeling invested and excited. I finish and there is a slight pause as the head person, to whom I've mainly addressed the remarks gets up and ducks under a kind of table top in front of her to get more food. Meanwhile, Zal says to me, "You did that really well," and kisses me on the cheek.
People get distracted with the arrival of more food. This is frustrating but I still feel good from expressing myself. They are now distributing various kinds of cake. By the time they get to the table where I am now there are only a few wedges left. I express a preference for one type but don't think I get it. There are several pieces on one plate, some to be shared with a blonde girl next to me. I just begin to eat without waiting further. One piece of cake is rather like crushed pineapple. I eat what I want."
Brenda's Comments:

In July of 2008, my painting of Patricia Garfield's dream, "The Branching Woman," was part of the "Dreams Without Borders" Art Expo, marking the 25th Anniversary Conference of the International Association of the Study of Dreams. It was a phenomenal experience to be in Montreal with dream professionals from all over the world, and to be included among an amazing group of talented artists!
On the night of the art Reception, I patiently waited all the winning artists were presented their Nancy Richter Brzeski Dream Art Awards in front of an audience of both English and French attendees. My painting was not to be eligible after winning last year, but before I could become too sad, my name was called to be honored with a new type of award, the first of it's kind: A Dream Analysis of artwork with a Gestalt Therapist.
I was very honored and thrilled, yet at the same time a part of me wondered, "What is this award, really? Perhaps they all think I'm just a little off my rocker and in need of some serious therapy." The award and its therapy was gladly accepted—after all it wasn't the first time I'd required a session — and because knowing myself deeply has been the driving passion behind my art work for years. I've explored dreams with this motive with great rewards. My experience is always personal regardless of whose dream I'm retelling on canvas. How could it not be? I became excited and eager to work with this therapist whowould help me understand more about my own experience and the "Branching Woman" inside me.
My appointment was with Layne Dalfen, author of Dreams Do Come True and host for the IASD conference. Immediately I felt comfortable with Layne. She's very knowledgeable, yet warm and natural in her manner. She explained that her dream work style was eclectic. We would look at the painting from many angles using Gestalt, Jungian and other methods.
We began by my retelling the dream in my own words and then I was asked to give definitions and to make associations. I described what I was trying to express, "I wanted 'Branching Woman' to have the feeling of being in a regal procession or even a fashion show." Layne asked, "What is a fashion show like?" "Well, it's highly publicized, important people come and see the latest creations. Being new and different, some of the fashions may look strange or outlandish. It's a visual banquet," was my reply.
We further discussed the feelings of being on stage, of being judged and the competition during a fashion show. Almost immediately, with Layne's guidance, I began to make a bridge between what I had painted and what had been recently happening in my life. (My artwork had been featured in a 4 page article of the Boulder News, and my home open to art appreciators for two citywide studio tours.) I caught myself saying that my "style" of painting has not been in "vogue," but lately it has been getting a lot of attention and acceptance.
I reflected back to Patricia's dream and remembered the love and encouragement felt in the dram after she stood up and shared the vision of "The Branching Woman." "Has anything like this been happening in your waking life?" Layne asked. It occurred to me that over the past year I had moved to a new community where several other professional artists also have studios. Two women artists in particular had embraced me as a friend, showing great admiration for my dream art paintings. Then it struck me that the three golden leaves in the left corner of the painting were the three of us! I thought I had added this golden detail only to give balance to the composition, but not so. My beautiful new friends had been my unconscious inspiration.
Next we discussed the antler-branches. I had used a bull elk as my reference. This choice, together with leaves falling and autumn colors meant for me the time in mid-life when so many women come into their full power. Also, I noticed a resemblance between the antler- branches and a brain with both right and left hemispheres. In my conversation, I mentioned Patricia Garfield, and other amazing women of her time, who had made it "fashionable" to be intelligent. This may be true, but at the same time I was casting a big bright shadow that needed to be recognized in myself. Owning my own "braininess" and being helped to know at last that it is OK to show it in public was an insight that will change me forever!
Layne further inquired about the tow small stubby horns right above "Branching Woman's" forehead. "Do you have anything to say about that?", she asked. "She looks a little devilish doesn't she?" I admitted, "She's a little Pan-like, I think." I had desired to create in "branching woman" a mystique...something not quite human, but archetypal. Yet, even being conscious of this, the archetypal energies that had been channeled were a surprise to me!
\ We talked about Pan as a mythical creature. I described him as "a freak of nature, half human and half animal, playful, musical, charming and seductive. He was the god of fertility and very much connected to creativity. It's the raw, sensual energy I need, but with which I often feel uncomfortable.
Thinking about Pan reminded me of my recent interest in the movie "Fur" starring Robert Downey Jr., and Nichole Kidman. The movie was an imaginary tale of famous photographer, Diane Arbus' unconscious life, and what made her the unique artist she was. When I viewed the movie a few months ago, I was captivated and touched to the pint of tears several times! A freakish man covered in hair moves into her apartment house and she is instantly attracted. She spends time with him to take his portrait and begins to fall in love with him. "She blossoms through her relationship with this man," I tell Layne, making an important connection for myself. Something about the love affair with the beast-man (in the movie) relates to my own life in a very powerful way, and has unconsciously manifested through the Pan-like horns of the "Branching Woman."
In my earlier years, allowing my creative muse to take me anywhere was forbidden. With a fundamentalist upbringing, many subjects were off limits and considered "of the devil." Deep inside I always had trouble accepting this, knowing creativity cannot be limited in this way, so I've always liked to peek (when I could) at the forbidden! Now, sharing my inner visions and my dream art feels like introducing to the world a freak lover.
Lastly, I told Layne that it was my conscious wish to make the head of "Branching Woman" prominent in the painting and to make the body blend in with the background, because in the dream language "there was a woman's head"—no mention of a body. I wanted to stay true to the dream as far as possible. Layne asked me to talk for the head and say why it needed to be prominent. "I have many thoughts that need to be expressed, theories and ideas, and I wish someone to listen to me," was the head's reply. From this I discovered a real "headiness" to my work, and a need for balance. The body needed to be heard more. What was my body saying lately? "Pay attention to me more! Give me good, nutritious food, move me, notice me!" I have always freely admitted that I am more at home in my head than my body, but I didn't realize it showed in what I painted.
How do I feel about "The Branching Woman: now after so much consideration? I think she's so amazingly transformative. She was a powerful image before. Just standing in her energy enlivened me, and caused my life to expand in many wonderful ways. But now, the deeper meaning revealed through my session with Layne Dalfen, has increased my appreciation of all aspects of myself. The light and the dark are not only acceptable, but vital and relevant to the artist I am becoming. My inner perspective has been adjusted toward balance, bringing me even closer to a fuller expression of who I am.

One Response to “Dream Art & Artists on the Web”

  1. It is my work to visualize the dreams of other people. With my Dreamoffice I performe several services for the public and organisations. I let people write down their dreams. Inspired by those dreams I make drawings and paintings. Sometimes these pictures are used to make public space more private, to connect people at an other level.
